Rond de Sloterplas heerst de laatste maanden een onrustige spanning. De stad lijkt te zijn verstrikt in een web van zwerfafval dat overal opduikt: op het gras, tussen de struiken, in het water, langs de oevers, zelfs aan de takken van de bomen. Het is alsof de natuur zelf probeert los te komen uit de kluwen van menselijke nalatigheid. Voor de bewoners van Nieuw-West wordt de situatie onhoudbaar en een mysterieuze groep besluit actie te ondernemen.
De uitnodiging
Op een grauwe zaterdagochtend vinden verschillende buurtbewoners een kaart in hun brievenbus. Op de voorkant staat een afbeelding van een stijlloos opgestapelde berg zwerfvuil. Op de achterkant staat een cryptische boodschap:
"Nieuw-West is verstrikt in afval. Bespotting hangt boven ons hoofd. Vind het getal dat ons redt. Begin bij de Sloterplas. De waarheid ligt in puzzels verborgen."
Onder de tekst staat een mysterieuze handtekening: VONW. Niemand weet wie erachter zit, maar de uitnodiging verspreidt zich razendsnel door het stadsdeel. Nieuwsgierige bewoners verzamelen zich die middag op meerdere plaatsen rond de Sloterplas. Op één van deze startpunten ben jij (misschien) nu ook.
De zoektocht begint
De zoektocht leidt deelnemers langs "X"-vragen rond de Sloterplas. Bij elke stop krijgen ze een vraag die een onderdeel vormt in de finale Slotpuzzel die aan het einde van je wandeling wordt onthult. Het geeft het antwoord op de centrale vraag: Hoeveel van het stedelijk budget zou er eigenlijk naar het afvalbeheer in Nieuw-West moeten gaan?
In willekeurige volgorde zijn de "X"-vragen langs je wandelroute te vinden. Ze hebben alle een "A", "S" of "L"-thema:

De Verstrikte stad
Bij een stop treffen deelnemers een installatie en volgt een strikvraag. Het antwoord vormt een cijfer van het mysterieuze getal. -
Bespottelijk veel
Bij een andere stop staat een soort totempaal vol bizarre aanhangsels.“Een gemiddelde Amsterdammer produceert jaarlijks afval gelijk aan het gewicht van drie fietsen.” De deelnemers moeten het meest bespottelijke getal eruit halen om verder te kunnen. -
Een Steunbetuiging van de natuur
Bij een andere stop lijkt spelen een item. "Spelen in een schone natuur".
fluistert de natuur. Deelnemers moeten zorgvuldig tellen en zich niet laten misleiden om het derde getal te verkrijgen. -
De Stijlloosheid van afval
Bij een brug met stenen stijlen ligt ook een opdracht: Optellen leidt naar de sleutel. Dit is het vierde getal. -
Het verstopte Stadsdeel
Vanuit ons - vaak voor de Centrale Stad - verstopte Stadsdeel ligt er een vergezicht in het verschiet. In dat vergezicht van Amsterdam moet richting worden gekozen. Komt daar het getal vandaan?
Het Mysterie ontrafeld
Aan het einde van de dag verzamelen de deelnemers zich bij meerdere pleisterplaatsen langs de Sloterplas. Ze leggen bijvoorbeeld de puzzelstukjes samen en ontrafelen het getal. Dit is het bedrag van het stedelijke budget in miljoenen dat zou moeten worden besteed aan afvalbeheer in Nieuw-West. Voor velen is het een bescheiden bedrag, gezien de omvang van het probleem.
Met een mix van frustratie en hoop besluiten de deelnemers hun steunbetuiging te tonen. Ze starten een petitie om het budget te verhogen en plannen meer acties om aandacht te vragen voor het afvalprobleem.
VONW verdwijnt
Die avond verschijnt een laatste bericht van VONW op sociale media:
"Jullie hebben de waarheid gevonden. Laat dit de eerste stap zijn naar een schone en eerlijke stad. Wij zijn overal en wij zijn jullie. Tot de volgende missie."
De mysterieuze zoektocht heeft niet alleen een belangrijk bedrag onthuld, maar ook een beweging in gang gezet. Rond de Sloterplas is een nieuwe energie voelbaar: een gezamenlijke strijd om dit stadsdeel te bevrijden uit de verstrikking van afval.

In recent months, a restless tension has enveloped the area around the Sloterplas. The city seems entangled in a web of litter appearing everywhere: on the grass, among the bushes, in the water, along the banks, even on the branches of the trees. It's as if nature itself is trying to free itself from the tangle of human negligence. For the residents of Nieuw-West, the situation has become untenable, and a mysterious group decides to take action.
The invitation
On a dreary Saturday morning, several neighborhood residents find a card in their mailbox. On the front is an image of a haphazardly piled heap of litter. On the back is a cryptic message:
"Nieuw-West is entangled in waste. Ridicule looms over us. Find the number that will save us. Begin at the Sloterplas. The truth is hidden in puzzles."
Below the text is a mysterious signature: VONW. No one knows who is behind it, but the invitation spreads rapidly throughout the district. Curious residents gather that afternoon at multiple locations around the Sloterplas. Perhaps you are at one of these starting points now.
The quest begins
The quest leads participants along "X" questions around the Sloterplas. At each stop, they receive a question that forms a part of the Slotpuzzel (final puzzle) revealed at the end of the walk. It answers the central question: How much of the municipal budget should actually be allocated to waste management in Nieuw-West?
The "X" questions can be found along your walking route in random order. They all have an "A", "S" or "L" theme:
The entangled city
At one stop, participants encounter an installation and face a trick question. The answer forms a digit of the mysterious number.
Ridiculously much
At another stop stands a sort of totem pole filled with bizarre appendages. "An average Amsterdammer produces annually waste equal to the weight of three bicycles." Participants must extract the most ridiculous number to proceed.
A token of support from nature
At another stop, play seems to be an item. "Playing in clean nature," whispers nature. Participants must count carefully and not be misled to obtain the third number.
The stylessness of waste
At a bridge with stone pillars lies another task: Adding up leads to the key. This is the fourth number.
The hidden district
From our often hidden district—often for the Central City—a vista lies ahead. In that vista of Amsterdam, a direction must be chosen. Does the number come from there?
The mystery unraveled
At the end of the day, participants gather at multiple resting spots along the Sloterplas. They piece together the puzzle pieces and unravel the number. This is the amount of the municipal budget in millions that should be allocated to waste management in Nieuw-West. For many, it's a modest amount, considering the scale of the problem.
With a mix of frustration and hope, the participants decide to show their support. They start a petition to increase the budget and plan more actions to draw attention to the waste problem.
VONW disappears
That evening, a final message from VONW appears on social media:
"You have found the truth. Let this be the first step toward a clean and just city. We are everywhere, and we are you. Until the next mission."
The mysterious quest has not only revealed an important figure but also set a movement in motion. Around the Sloterplas, a new energy is palpable: a collective effort to free this district from the entanglement of waste.
